Eyelash Transplantation
Eyelash transplant surgery is an
elective, cosmetic procedure that
adds eyelashes to the eyelids to
enhance existing eyelashes that are
short and sparse, or to replace
eyelashes that have been lost due to
trauma. Using microsurgical
techniques, the procedure requires a
highly skilled surgical team with
experience and expertise to
transplant the hair to the eyelid
and achieve natural, permanent
results.
Prior to performing the procedure, a
thorough history and physical
examination focused on hair loss is
performed. During the consultation,
the procedure and postoperative
course will be discussed in detail.
The procedure is performed in the
office using local anesthesia and is
completed in 2-3 hours. The donor
hair for the transplant is selected
and removed from the back or sides
of the scalp to closely match the
native eyelashes. The hair is then
microscopically dissected and
implanted into the eyelid using very
fine surgical instrumentation to
ensure proper direction and growth
of each hair. The density number of
eyelashes transplanted also varies
with each case and some patients may
require an additional session to
achieve their goal.
Postoperatively, there may be some
mild bruising, swelling and
discomfort at the eyelids and donor
site so medication will be
prescribed. Detailed instructions
are provided to guide the patient
during the postoperative period. The
transplanted hair usually sheds
after three weeks while the follicle
inside the eyelid remains alive and
active. The eyelashes start to grow
in six to eight weeks and will have
the same characteristics as the
donor hair. The hair will require
trimming and may need to be curled.
A full cosmetic result can be
expected within 12 months.
